Early Dinner and Late Lunch Malaysian Style

So me and my friend went out to try some "alleged" authentic Cantonese cuisine over in Doraville, GA (Atlanta's large Asian and Spanish community). Our intent was to visit Wan Lai, a Cantonese restaurant that I read about on the Creative Loafing website. Well when we finally arrived we walked up to a empty space in a little Asian shopping strip mall. So being the starving maidens that we were we decided to walk around the plaza in search of another restaurant that would feed my need for fried rice. We ended up deciding on a Malaysian spot called Penang (4897 Buford Highway Chamblee, GA 30341).

The Roti Canai
crispy Indian style pancake with curried chicken and potato sauce
Me and my girl Shay killed this appetizer. The curry was sooo good. The curry taste similar to the curry I have eaten from the Whole Food's Market I work. We tore and dipped while chatting without a glance down at the plate until we realized it was all gone.

The Honey Squid
This was also an appetizer but I ordered it a little after the pancake and curry. I wanted some sort of seafood but not the typical calamari with black pepper. This was tentacles only and tasted a little charred as if grilled. The sauce was soooo good. It was like a caramelized teriyaki sauced with a hint of nutty sesame oil and a light spice. I was popping these back but my friend who never try anything was having a hard time getting past the way it looked.

This is the Clay Pot Pearl Noodle Soup which was way better than I thought it would be. Pearl noodles with minced shrimp, chicken, egg in a (obviously) clay pot. Without the crispy onions on top I felt this dish would have been in the bland department. After I did away with all of the crispy noddles I was force to resort to adding a few drops of soy sauce. I try to refrain from add any condiments to a meal unless absolutely necessary and this was almost unnecessary but I really felt that one drop was needed. You go and try and decide for yourself.

Oh but of course we ordered the shrimp fried rice. When my friend laid eyes on the soup I order she nearly fainted so I figured one normal dish that we both have had before would only be fair. I can only torture her so much right?
